THE TUAPEKA CONTEST.
For the second time within six months Dr Chappie finds himself in the position of a Ministerial candidate without Ministerial support for a seat in Parliament It is not surprising in the circumstances that, in his addresses to the electors, he should rely chiefly upon his personal merits, which, it may freely be acknowledged, are very considerable, says the "Otago Daily Times." His speech at Naseby was, indeed, so free from any partisan colour that no one who was unaware that the candidate was a supporter of the Government would have gleaned that fact from it. Dr Chappie is really not of the class of politician who could be expected to submit tamely to the discipline of party as it has been exercised on behalf of the Ministry for many years in New Zealand.
