BY TELEGRAPH—PKESS ASSOCIATION. , Received October 13, 1.15 p.m. LONDON, October 12. - Ernest Barry defeated George Towns, ex-sculling champion of the world, for the (English championship, the Sportsman (Jup, and £2OO aside. The race was rowed with a strong tide. Barry, who had the Surrey side of the river, won easily by a length and a-half in 21min 12 2-ssec. Thousands thronged the banks of the river. There was great anthusiasr.l over the Englishman's win. Received October 13, 10.5 p.m. LONDON, October 13. Towns, in an Australian built boat, and rowing 35 strokes to Barry's 32, dashed to the front and led by half a length at the half mile, a length at the mile, and three-quarters of a length at Hammersmith. Barry made a grand spurt and passed Towns at ChiswickChurch, He afterwards kept two lengths ahead, despite Towns' plucky spurt in the last furlong.
