LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ELECTION EXPENSES. RESOLUTION BY THE COUNTY COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Coir.cil yesterday morning th 6 fliiei ■ tion of expenses in connection with the Licensing Committee election, to be held ih March next, was introduced by Cr W. J. Welch, who moved, and Cr J. Miller seconded, the following motion:~ "That in pursuance of the powers conferred upon it as the controlling authority in the Masterton Licensing District by section 9 of the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, 1893, the Masterton County Council hereby determines that for the purposes of the next Licensing Committee election, to ue hekl during the,month of Marcti next, ;n the said district, the fees and travdlLg expenses to be paid to the returning; officer, deputy returning officers, and poll clerks shall be on the following scale: —Returning officer, £5 ss; deputyreturning .officer.!, £1 Is each; poll clerks, 10s 6d each. "Travelling expenses Where there is daily service by train or public conveyance the actual firstclass fares, both ways, together with hotel expenses at the rate of 10s per day for each day of 24 hours, such returning officer, deputy, or clerk, is absent from hjs usual place of residence on the business of the election. Where there is no regular daily service by train or public conveyance—one shilling per mile one way only from the residence of the officer to the polling booth, or to the nearest railway station or coach office as the case may be, together with the hotel allowance previously set forth. "It is hereby further determined that each of the public notices incident to the said election shall not ap pear in more than six consecutive issues of the Wairarapa Age, " Wairarapa Daily Times," and "Eketahuna Express" newspapers; that such notification shall be charged at the ordinary rate paid by the Masterton County Council for advertising in the said newspapers, and shall not be "indented" nor inserted in any weekly edition issued from the offices of the said newspapers. "That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the returning officer, and also to the Minister of Justice with a request that he will instruct the returning officer to make arrangements for the said election in accordance therewith."
The motion was earned, and in the afternoon the Council adopted the recommendation unanimously.
