CHARGE OF UNDERMANNING.
CAPTAINS FINED,

At the Police Court to-day, Mr Widdowsen, S.M., gave judgment in the cases in which Captains Newton and Macdonald were charged with undermannwg in connection with the steamer Moana. In recording a conviction and fining Captain Newton £lO and costs, and Captain M'Donald £5 and costs, the Magistrate said the circumstances relied on by the defence—namely that the ships carried a boatswain who was an A.B. —might be taken into consideration in mitigation of the penalty. He did not look on the offence as very serious, seeing that the boatswain was the pick of the crew, and the prosecution attained its end by calling attention to the stringent provisions of the Act. It was absolutely necessary that the masters of a ship should see that the full complement of crew was carried. Any dereliction of such a duty would be seriously met in the courts.
