THE NORTHERN APPROACH.
THE QUESTION OP IMPROVEMENT. COUNTY-RATEPAYERS TO BE CONUPULTED. A Committee meeting of the Masterton County Council was held on Monday evening in pursuance of a resolution passed at last meeting for the purpose of discussing the improvement of the northern approach to Masterton, and the question of what part of the cost the County should bear. There were present, Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), W. Harris, J. Miller, J. Morris, H. O. Toogood, J. Colquhoun, A. Murray, C. Kebbell, and R. F. Beetham. The subject was discussed at considerable length. Cr Murray moved as follows : "That this committee recommends the Council to advisa the persons interested in the proposal that it is' proposed to take a poll of County ratepayers upon the question of raising a loan for the purpose of improving the northern approach to Masterton, if they, the persons interested, will guarantee the costs thereof, on the understanding that such costs would be a charge on the loan, it carried." This motion failed to find a seconder. " After some further discussion the Chairman moved and Cr Murray seconded, "That this Council suggests that the Council should approach all the ratepayers in the County by circular, furnishing particulars of the amount estimated to be required, and the nature of the work to be carried out, and requesting them to state whether they are in favour or otherwise of proceeding with the work upon the basis stated, and for this purpose raising a loan of £3,000, to be supplemented by a like contribution from the Borough of Masterton." This motion was carried and the meeting adjourned.
