EXPERIENCES OF DR. SVEN HEDIN. A LECTURE AT SIMLA. CALCUTTA, September 2R. Dr. Sven Hedin, the great traveller, who has just rtturned from Tibet, lectured privately at Simla, in the Punjab, before the Earl of Minto (Viceroy of India), Vi3c.ount Kitchener (Commander-in Chief of the Indian Army), and a selecc assembly of high officials regarding his travels. Lord Minto, in complimenting Dr Hedin on his wordeiful story of adventure and incident, declared that the the traveller had divulged discoveries ot Brahamputra Valley.

Dr. Hedin has been exploring in Western Tibet for the past two years. Fears weie entertained for his safety a nuntii or two ago, so long was it that be had been heard from. A letter from his servant, however, conveyed the intelligence that the explorer was in good health and his caravan in first-class order. He has made several journeys in Tibet, including one k from Orenburg to Pekin, by way of Lob nor and Lhassa in 1893-7, and another through the Gobi Dusert and Tibet. He has been through Persia, Khorasan, Turkestan, and Southern Siberia, and his work has been very valuable 1 , especially 33 he is an accurate carjograpnist and a keen observer. He is now 43 years of age.
