GREAT DISTRESS AT THE BAHAMAS. MANY HOUSES DESTROYED. Received September 24, 9.35 p.m. LONDON, September 24. A hurricane devastated the Ba hamas, wrecking many vessels and destroying many houses. Great distreus prevails.
The Bahamas (or Lucayos) Islands are a chain of British West Indian Islands stretching nearly 600 miles north-westward from near the coast of Hayti to the East <"- o ast Florida. There are twenty large islands, 653 islets and 2,387 reefs.
