THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.
Some 68 sawmill employees in the Taumarunui district are petitioning the House through Mr W. T. Jen-
nings, M.P. for Egmont, urging that a duty of at least 7s per 100 feet be placed on such imported timbers as Oregon and Pacific pine and Manchurian spruce. The petition states that "the importation of foreign timber produced by Asiatic cheap labour ia i having a serious elfect on the local j industry, inasmuch as many mills j have closed down, an 1 a considerable ' number are working short time, and we fe »r the result will be disastrous to the whole community."
