HOLY SYNOD'S PRONOUNCEMENT. k Received September 7, 8.35 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, Sept. 6. The Russian Holy Synod pronounced Count Leo Tolstoi a backslider, and ordered true believers to retrain from participating in the celebration of his eightieth birthday. The Synod also directed the priests to refute his writings.
