HOLY SYNOD'S PRONOUNCEMENT. k Received September 7, 8.35 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, Sept. 6. The Russian Holy Synod pronounced Count Leo Tolstoi a backslider, and ordered true believers to retrain from participating in the celebration of his eightieth birthday. The Synod also directed the priests to refute his writings.

Received September 7, 11.47 p.m. ST. PETERSBURG, September 7. Russian newspapers severely censure the Synod's decree against Tolstoi.
