PLEASURE BOAT DAMAGED.
Received September 5, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, September 5. The steamer Leura, with over one hundred passengers on board, was making an excursion round the United States fleet, when the American collier, Ajax; outward bound, collided with her. The collier cut deep into the Leura's starboard quarter, making ? hole 70 feet square, extending from the deck to below the water line. The vessels hung together until the passengers had clambered aboard the Ajax or been transferred to a tuf manned by men from the battleship Connecticut, which came to their assistance. The Leura's bulkheads remained intact, and prevented her from sinking. She returned to.port. The Ajax's bow was badly battered, several plates being wrenched out of position. She was docked. There was a momentary panic among the Leura's passengers, and one or two women fainted. The Leura is an iron screw steamer of 1,186 tons gross, ownej by Howard Smith and Co., Ltd., Melbourne.
