THE MINING INDUSTRY.
One of the most interesting of the Departmental reports relating to the various aspects of the development of the mineral resources of New Zealand is that which concerns itself with details as to work on tha goldfields. One can gather some idea uf the auriferous wealth of New Zeaalnd from the fact that in slightly more than half a century it has yielded gold to ths value of over seventy millions sterling, while last year's harvest of the precious metal I was worth over two millions sterling I and represented the labours of over nine thousand men. The productivity of quartz mining increases as that of alluvial mining diminishes, a fact which is emphasised in the circumstance that last year the returns from the auartz mines again constituted a record for the Dominion, while scanty rainfall was responsible for an abnormal fall in the production of alluvial gold.
