AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
The Premier of the Commonwealth | has announced at Ballarat that the passage of the Australian Defence Bill is hoped for by the end of the year, and that the National Guard will then be established before the close of next year. As the Labour Party has decided to support the new defence proposals, the passage of the Bill through both Houses of the j Federal Parliament may be regarded as a foregone conclusion. Australia will thus have the honourable distinction of being the first British State to institute the universal defensive training of its youth, and the constant satisfaction of knowing that
every passing .year finds it more and more capable of effective resistance against any invading force.
