THREATENED LOCK-OUT IN GERMANY.
The threatened lock-nut in the German shipbuilding yards may possibly inaugurate a gigantic struggle between the employers and the workmen. For some time the social tension in Germany has been v<?ry great, the conflict between Berlin workmen and the military which occurred during the hist Northern winter having left much bitterness behind it. The agitation for political reform has been associated with the demand for shorter hours of labour and increased wages, and striking has become the order of the day. Ihe shipbuilding firms are the first to attempt to put an end to a condition of things which hampers and retards the carrying out of pressing contracts, and much depends upon the temper in which the lock-out notices are received.
