THE TIMBER TRADE.
The recent proposal to increase the duty en imported timber, and thus expedite the using-up of the native supply is singularly ill-timed, says the Christchurch "Press." It would surely be better to remove the present duty, thus not only relieving the strain on our vanishing forests, but cheapening the cost of building houses and giving added employment to carpenters. The whole question demands the earnest consideration of the Government, and members of tha Legislature will fail in their duty to the country if they do not impress upon Ministers that it must be dealt with without further delay, on broad and sound principles.
