TURF NOTES.
Excellent acceptances have heen received for the Grand National meeting, which will open to-morrow, when the principal events will be the Grand National Steeplechase and the Winter Cup. For the big cross country event there may be eleven starters, and the contestants will include winners of note, such as Kiatere, Loch Fyne, Nadador, Tilson, Eurus, Le Beau and Papatu. The outside division will comprise Starlight, Albury and Storm. Kiatero is said to be footing well. Loch Fyne is doing satisfactory work at Riccarion; Nadador is in peridot „,,,„.. while i ilson a d E-jmjs me <=" i I t» pleasing their connections in their training work. The race is a most open one, and the several thousands in attendance to-morrow should witness a fine contest. No less than twenty-three have been paid up for in the Winter Cup, and perhaps t.venty will face the barrier. Among the recent winners are Lupulite, Sir Frisco, Wailethe, Penates and Si.nrlex.and these together with All Red, Cross Battery, Motoa, North Head, Golden Cairn, Maharanui, and others of less note, should provide a really good race. Wairarapa will be represented by Mr C. F. Vallance's Simplex. In the Jumpers' Flat Handicap several Grand National Hurdle candidates, including Paritutu.Stronghold, Pretty Maid, Sen Sim and Compass, will start, consequently a great amount of interest will be shown as to which shapes best over the mile and a-half on the flat.
The steeplechase mare Valima was taken down to Riccsrton on Friday, and will compete in the Enfield Steeplechase. C. Jenkins has been granted a jockey's license by the Wanganui Jockey Club, and will be riding for the Prosaer stable at Riccarton this week. Multifid is to be submitted for sale by auction at Christchurch on Friday next. As a number of Australian buyers are over to attend the sale of the late Mr G. G. Stead's horses, the son of Multiform —Heriot may realise a good sum. Mr I. Freetn's Merria England— Sunfish colt, Merrie Christmas, will not be raced again until he is four-years-old, by which time it is expected he will show better staying form.
