PITY THE MIDDLE CLASSES.
The London "Daily Mail" has been devoting some attention to the unhappy plight of the middle classes in England, who find the burden of taxation heavief year by year. The man with an income of £SOO probably pays £SO for his house, £ls income tax if his income is unearned, and £ll 5s if it is "earned," £lB in rates, £1 5s house duty and £ll 8s in indirect taxation, a total for taxation of £4l 18s r or £45 13s, according to whether or not be is living on the savings of his ancestors or by his own exertions. If his income is "unearned" and he insures to pay the cost of the heavy death duties on his estate',, this will cost him £ls more, beginning at the age of 30. The man with an income of £I,OOO pays about £IOO in. taxation, and another £3o> if he wishes to insure against, death duties. The taxation of the middle class is estimated to range between 8 and 13 per cent., without allowing for such items as stamp and transfer duties, game licenses and many other sources of expense
