THE HIGH COMMISSIONERSHIP.

The Dominion has undoubtedly sustained a loss by the resignation of the Hon. W. P. Reeves of the High Commissionership for New Zealand. It is useless to deny that to properly discharge the duties of that important post certain qualifications are required, and in Mr Reeves those necessary qualities were peculiarly prominent. Highly educated, refined and cultured man, a good orator, a keen debater, thoroughly loyal to the Dominion, and absolutely energetic, Mr Reeves represented New Zealand in the capital of the Empire in a way that no member of the present Minisry or Government party could excel, and but few of them could hope to emulate the distinguished High Commissioner who has just resigned. Sir Joseph Ward would probably make a better High Commissioner than anyone else in the Dominion. The Hon. Hall-Jones has been mentioned as the probable successor to Mr Reeves, and although Mr Hall-Jones would no doubt worthily represent New Zealand at Home, at the same f.ime he would not be equal in capacity to MiReeves. A point of interest in connection with Mr Reeves' resignation is, assuming that the post is filled by some member of the present Ministry being appointed to it, who will be the member so fortunate as to attain Cabinet rank?
