THE CHIEF VETERINARIAN.
The appointment of Mr J. A. Gilruth to the high position of Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Director of Stock Diseases, at the Research Institute of Victoria, means that New Zealand is losing not only its ablest Veterinarian, but one of its most popular stock officials. Mr Gilruth is well-known to farmers in this district, where he has paid a number of visits. It was Mr Gilruth also who gave the Masterton Borough Council some excellent advice regarding the drainage of the Abattoir, the Council deciding unanimously to adopt his scheme. Quite a young man, Mr Gilruth has by sheer merit climbed rapidly to the top of his profession, and veterinarians throughout the Dominion regard him as the leading authority on many scientific matters Ever alert in the interests of his department he has made it the best organised and moat efficient branch of the public service which specialises our farming industries. While Mr Gilruth is to be heartily congratulated on his splendid appointment, the New Zealand Government cannot be commended for allowing a capable official to leave its service.'. All along there has been an impression that our Chief Veterinarian has
not been estimated by the Department at his true value, in spite of the fact that members of his own profession have always lauded his undoubted ability.
