WEAPONS OF DESTRUCTION.
SUGGESTION FOR STOPPING ENORMOUS OUTLAY. Received July 20, 10.12 p.m. LONDON, July 20. Speaking at Wirral. the Hon. A. Birrel (Chief Secretary foiylreland), in referring to the vast expenditure on the military and naval force, urged a rapproachment between the workers of all nations with a view to stopping the enormous outlay on weapons of destruction.
According to a recently-published return of the "cost of defending the Empire" for the year 1905-06, the naval and military expenditure per head of population works out as under:— Military. United Kingdom 13 94 15 H New Zealand 4 3g 0 106 Australia 3 9j 1 4$ Cape Colony 4 7* 0 5 Canada 4 H ~ Natal ? 4 0 7J Transvaal 2 0£ Newfoundland 0 3J Total Colonies 3 111 0 6 'Taking aggregate figures, the return indicates that the colonies, taken as a whole, with 15,934,588 people, spent in 1905-OG for military and naval purposes £3,548.709 (military £3,164,466, naval £384,243); while the United Kingdom, with a population of 43,217,687, spent for military and naval purposes (military £23,813,000, naval £33,389,500).
