"A CHEERFUL LAND."

MR BIRRELL ON IRELAND. Received July 20, 10.12 p.m. LONDON, July 19. Mr Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, speaking at Wirral, denied that Ireland was a land of crime and disorder. No more cheerful land, he said, could be found. Regrettable disturbances had happened owing to the withokling of grass lands from the operation of the land purchase proposal. Encouraged by the recommendation of the recent Commission, the Government intended to introduce legislation reducing this great evil. ~ Then Inland would be a peaceful country.
