A MEETING OF UNEMPLOYED.
BY TKLEGBAPH —PHESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. About 1,000 men attended a meeting of unemployed, held in Cathedral Square, this afternoon. Mr F. Patterson, Secretary of the Gf eral Labourers Union presided. T e following resolution was passed: —"That this meeting affirms the right to work"; "That this meeting of Christchurch workers strongly protect* against the Government's immigration polidy alluring workers to the lJominion under false pretences when it cannot absorb the labour in its midst;" that this meeting ol citizens strongly protests against the proposal of the Government to expend from £5,000 to £IO,OOO i f pubilc money in welcoming the American Navy, on the occasion ol itd visit to these shores." After the meeting the unemployed were asked to stand in one corner, and between 70 and 100 did so. They then appointed a deputation which waited on the Mayor, who undertook to forward the resDlutions to the Premier, and to place the matter before the City Council on Monday. He also asked Mr Pattsrfon to submit a list of the trtn out of work.
