SCULLING. CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA
Received July 19, 4.25 p.m. SYDNEY, July 19. The .sculling race for the Championship of Australia and £IOO aside, between Thoroughgood and Fogwell, was rowed over the Raymond Terrace course on the Hunter river yesterday. From an even start Thoroughgood was soon a quarter of a length in the lead, which be held to past the halfmile post. Then Fogwell drew level, rowing stroke for stroke. There was an exciting struggle to the mile post, the distance being covered in smin 30sec. Just beyond the mile post both scullers, taking the middle of the river, fouled. Thoroughgood was the quicker to get going again, and established a lead of six lengths before Fogwell fairly started in-.pur-suit. Though Fogwell stuck gamely to the finish be was unable to overhaul Thoroughgood, who won by eight lengths. Time, 18min 20 2-5 sec. The umpire declared Thoroughgood to be the winner.
A WEEK OF FESTIVITIES. MELBOURNE, July 18. There is reason to believe that a movement is afoot among domestic servants to quit service during the week the American Fleet is here, and take up work again when the festivities are over.
