THE PRESENT AGREEMENT.

MR DEAKIN'S OPINION. Received July 16, 10.25 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 16. The Federal Prime Minister, Mr Deakin, referring to Mr M'Kenna's statement with reference to the Aus tralian naval defence scheme, states that the Admiralty is content with the present arrangement. It must refer only to the currency of the prepent agreement, and not to any period after its expiry. If a proposal were made for renewal of the agreement as it stands, he was sure the Admiralty would want to say a good deal. He knew that some of the advisers of'the Admiralty were anxious to terminate the agreement, as it cost more than it was worth.
