ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.

MUSICAL RECITAL,

There was a very fair attendance at St. Matthew's Church, last evening, considering the unfavourable weather conditions, when a musical recital was given by the Choir under the direction of Mr H. S. Claughton (organist and cnoirmaster). An ■excellent list of numbers had been tehearsed, and the various singers and the choir acquitted themselves very creditably, ,the organist also ■displaying a true conception of the ideas of the composers in the difficult solos undertaken by hiir*. The proa ram me submitted was as follows: Chorus, " Magnificat in F," the Choir; organ so!o, ""Fugue in Eb, St. Ann's, Mr H. S. Claughton; duet, (vocalJ''l Waiteri for the Lord," Miss K. Holloway and Miss Fuller; organ solo "A Dream of -Spring"; air (bass), "It is Enough," from "Elijah," Mr F. J. Hunn; organ, "Sonata No III," Mr Claughton; quartette, "Shepherd of Souls," Miss E. Jago, Miss F. Elkins, Mr Nixon and Mr Hunn; solo, recitative "Come Unto Me," Miss Fuller; an- < them (soprano sob), "God That Madest Earth and Heaven," Mis 3 Holloway and the Choir; solo (contralto), "Crossing the Ear," Miss F. Elkins; chorus, "Nunc Dimittis," jthe Choir; concluding voluntary, " '""Fantasia in E." item3 which call for •specK* mention wern the duet by Misses Holloway and Fuller, the recitative by Miss Fuller, Mr Bunn's solo, and Miss El'kins' solo. AM were rendered with due expression and artistic attention to light and shad J. Tha best organ solo were perhaps the "Dream of Spring," a delightful melody, in fresh, contemplative style, and the E flat Fugue. An offertory was taken up in aid of the organ extension fund. It is proposed to hold the recitals monthly.
