ROUGH WEATHER IN CANTERBURY.
BY TELEGRAPH-r-PKESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7. Christchjrch was partially flooded to day on account of the heavy ai d continuous downpour of rain during thj past 24 hours. At the gasworks the flood water caused a stoppage of the gas engines, and the niruiufaciure of gas had to be stopped. At Lyttelton work on the wharves was suspended. There was a heavy pale along the coast, and shipping was delayed, the Maori from Wellington not arriving till 8 a.m., and the Ruapehu from Wellington not till 10.35, am. The collier Petone frcm Greymouth has not yet' put in an appearance, and the Waipori from Westport did not arrive till 1 p.m. owing to the steam steering gear carrying away off Kaikoura. The telegraph wires are down on the Waiau-Kaikoura route, and the West Coast wires are also interrupted. Later The rain ceased this evening, and the flood waters are rapidly subsiding. The gasworks were able to start again to-night. The direct wires with the North are still interrupted, ancL all North Island messages are being sent via Greymouth and Blenheim.
