FIRE AT AKURA.
DESTRUCTION OF A RESIDENCE.
A fire occurred at Akura early last evening, when the residence of Mr J. Sedcole, on the comer of Akura and Upper Opaki Roads, was totallydestroyed. Mr Sedcole was at home at the time, aiid v stated that he had left the house at about 7.30 o'clock to harness up the horse in the stable, just behind the house. About six or I seven minute 3 after he looked towards the house and noticed that the mof looked to be red hot near one of the chimneys. He rushed to the back door to go inside when the draught caused thereby evidently fanned the fire in the roof and the house was soon completely ablaze. Mr Sedcole saved only a few articles of furniture, the fire getting t OO g oo s a hold before he could <-'o much in this respect. The house, which was a fiveroomed one, is insured, but Mr Sedcole was not able to state last evening for what amount. There is a risk of £75 over the furniture in the State office. Mr Sedcole estimates his loss at double that amount. The Masterton firebells pealed a vigorous alarm, and the Jubilee engine was taken to the spot, but it was of no assistance.* The Fire Police also mustered, but their services were likewise found unavailing.
