CAPE COLONY.
THE BUDGET.
DEFIENCY FOR THE PAST YEAR. Received July ii, 12.12 a.m. •CAPETOWN, July 1. Mr Merriman, introducing his Budget into the Cape Parliament, showed a deficiency for the past year of £996,000. Ths Government's retrenchments led to a saving of £617,000. He anticipated a deficiency of £906,760. He proposed, amongst other things, to deduct five per cent, from the salaries of Civil Servants and members of Parliament. The Premier added that the Government did not want Cape Colony to enter into a closer union with the other colonies as a bankrupt State.
