ORNAMENTAL?
The state of the ornamental trees that are growing, or supposed to be growing in Pine Street, from the railway station down to Timothy Street is most unsatisfactory to say the least. The trees were planted some time ago, and under favourable conditions, a special strip along the outer edge of the footpath being alloced for the purpose. The idea waa to have a fine sweep of ornamental trees all along the street, so that the entrance to the town from the railway station would be pleasing and attractive. But the welfare of the trees has been neglected, and all that remains now is a long line ol broken and delapidated objects that are a perfect eyesore. Only a few of the trees have survived. In many instances stakes that marked the spot where a shrub once e;rew now grace the thoroughfare at various angles from the perpendicular. The whole line of ornamental trees would look more in keeping with the times if it bounded the outskirts of some deserted Maori pah. The only thing they harmonise with is the sea of mud which stretches all along the roadway referred to. Ornamental trees should certainly be growing along Pine Street, and it is suggested that Arbor Day, which will shortly be here, would be a fitting time to form the nucleus of an attractive and ornamental entrance to the town from the railway station.
