(From Our Own Correspondent). { One of Mauriceville's earliest j settlers, Mrs Hans Petersen, died on Thursday last. The deceased lady waj 76 'years of age, and had been ailing for some time, but expired rather suddenly, heart d'sease being the cause of death. A husband, four sons and four daughters are left to mourn their loss. One of the sons is Mr Petersen, of the Temperance Hotel, Masterton. The funeral took place on Saturday, and the respect in which the deceased was held was evinced by the large number of residents that attended the funeral. The burial ceremony was conducted by the Kev. Legarth, the Lutherian minisThe local cricketers have definitely decided to hold a plain and fancy dress social arid dance on Friday, June 19th. The Hastwell Band has arranged to give a concert and dance at Hastwell on June 12th. Tho question of a recreation ground for Mauriceville was brought before a meeting of the local cricketers last week. Practically, the only property 1 suitable for the purpose is the one known as the "Horseshoe Bend" Some time ago the owner of this proparty was approached on the matter, and an offer made, but nothing further was done. The cricketers ha\e row appointed a committee to wait on the owner and lessees of the property in regard to the matter. If a satisfactory report is obtained by the committee, a public meeting will be held for the purpose of discussing ways and means. It is to be hoped that the question will be pushed forward at once, as I undarstand that if arrangements are not made speedily this property, which is an ideal one for the purpose, will not be available—at least for a number of years. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here at 9.40 o'clocK on Sunday morning.
