TARIFF REFORM.
NATIONAL MIND MUST BE CONVERTED. LONDON, May 29. Lord Milner, at the Women's Tariff Reform meeting, urged that before a permanent fiscal change is •possible there must be a conversion •of the national mind, extending far beyond the bounds of or.e party, similar to that which in Sir Robert Peel's time brought the bulk of the people on the side of what has been called jfjftee trade. WHAT REFORMERS JUSTIFIED IN CLAIMING. Received May 31, 4.26 p.m. LONDON, May 30. Mr Austen Chamberlain, Liberal - Unionist M.F., speaking at the annual meeting of the Liberal- ' Union Club, deprecated the allegation that fiscal reform would necessarily cause cheap food or work for all or prevent fluctuations of trade. What the reformers were justified in claiming was that if the fiscal system -were reformed there would be more work for the British people, a greater de- . mand for labour and better conditions in the labour market.
