MUSICAL RECITAL.

"CHRIST AND HIS SOLDIERS."

The oratorio "Christ and His Soldiers," wag produced at Knox Church last evening by the church choir. There was a crowded audience, and the production of this difficult but very beautiful work was a distinct credit to those taking part in it. The choir was assisted by several well-known leading vocalists, and for weeks past the greatest'assiduity had been shown by both soloists and members of the chorus in the preparation of their parts. The result was that last evening the piece went through from ntart to finish with few technical deficiencies, and evidences of careful tuition were very apparent. The recitative, "Suffer Little Children" the opening chorus—was well delivered, and was followed by the solo and chorus, "Hark! the glad sound," Miss M. Cameron taking the c'olo. The bass song, "And did the Son of man appear" (Mr F. J. Hunn), followed after the exquisitely worded carol, "In the fields with their flocks abiding," and the chorus, "0, Come all ye faithful." Mr W. S. Jago took "When I survey the wondrous cross," and Mrs Torrence "By Jesus' grave." Mr J. Gray led in the solo and chorus, "Jesus Christ is ri3en to-day," Miss M. Cameron following with "Our Blest Redeemer, ere He Breathed." Mrs F. C. Lewis took the solo in "Hark I a thrilling voice is sounding," Mr Hunn coming afterwards with "In token that thou shalt not fear." "The Son of Gcd goes forth to war" was sung by Mr Jago, Mr Hunn taking up the two succeeding solos. Mrs Lewis, Miss McGregor and Messrs Gray and F. J/'Hunn composed the quartette in "Jesus, died for us/' All the soloists gave excellent renderings of their parts, and the choruses throughout were well sustained. The choirmaster, Mr R. J. Young, can claim to have provided a musical treat in oratorio which x seldom fulls to the lot of Masterton music-lovers. The splendid assistance of orchestral music greatly helped the singing and enhanced the effect of the fine solos which abound in tho oratorio. '
