NEW ZEALAND v. AUSTRALIA

WIN FOR VISITORS.

A match was played to-day between the New Zealand professional team and Australia. The New Zealanders snored a victory by eleven points to ten points. The visitors play was much improved in all departments, as compared with previous matches. There was fine weather and a big attendance. The following were the teams:

New Zealand.—Full-back, Turtill; three-quarters, Baskiville, Wrjgley, Kelly; five-eighths, Tyler and Barber; half, R. Wynyard; forwards, Mackrell, Pearce, Trevarthen, Cross, Johnston, Bryne, I

Australia. Full-back, Headley; three - quarters, McLean (Queensland), Messenger, Devereux, Cheadles; halves, Roaenfield, Dore (Queensland);. forwards, Graves, Hennessy, Rosewell, McCabe, Hudge, Subn-ann (Queensland).

Turtill captained the New Zealanders and Hennessy Australia. The visitors made the pace warm from the outset, and had the home team in trouble. Play, was in the home team's territory for many minutes, and then Messenger relieved. The Blacks continued to the line repeatedly, and several times were almost over. Ths Australians offered a stubborn resistance. The game was stopped ftr a time owing to Hennessey being struck on the face by one of the New Zealand forwards. As the outcome the New I Zealander was ordered off the field. On resuming, . Dore was penalised for coming too quickly round the pack. Wrigley's shot at goal failed. New Zealand kept their opponent's on the defensive. McCabe here retired. First blood came from a scrum. Wynyard bumped his 'way over and scored a try, which was not converted. ~JNew Zealand, 3 ; Australia nil. After a few lively.exchanges in the centre, Baskiville picked up the ball in the open, beak ing HeJley and Cheadle, and scorecT in a good position. Wrigleyconverted.— New Zealand, 8; Australia, nil. Australia at this stage were outclassed, and were beaten for the ball in every scrum. A bit of smart play resulted in the Blacks, again scoring. Wrigley took one of Messenger's returns at half-way. and passed to Pearce, who». passed to Wynyard, who scored in the corner, j ( Wrigley missed the goal.—New Zea-. land, 11; Australia, nil. After the kick out,. Devereux almost immediately marked , and Messenger placed the first two points to the credit of Australia. The home .team's play livened considerably before half time. Messenger had two shots at goal' from marks, but both failed. Ac half time, the score was—New* Zealand, 11; Australia, 2. On resuming, Australia was soon in trouble, but Hedeley relieved. A series of scrums followed. The Australians were now showing better form. Twice the visitors were compelled to force, once as the, result of: a drop kick by Messenger, which went wide. Shortly after Messenger, had another phot but missed, and then in quick succession two mere unsuccessful shots at goal. More lively play iv - lowed, and nt the end of a, general mix.up, Turtill marked, but Wrigley - missed the goal. > The Australians were now. playing a rigorous, and brilliant game. The first score resulted through Messenger feinting cleverly end racing n, tten ied by Jones, who mulled the pass. Hudge, however, gathered up the ball and scored in the corner. Messenger's kick failed. New Zealand, 11; Australia, 5. Encouraged by this success, the Australians continued to press. Australia had another unsuccessful try at goal, and a little later the ball rebounding across the line Kosenfield swept in and scored. Messenger converted.—New Zealand, 11; Australia, 10. On the few minutes remaining to the call of time, the Australians made a strenuous attempt to win. Messenger twice again assayed goals. Johnston claims* that Hennessy's iniury was the result of an accidental blow in the coursu of play. Hennessy received a nasty cut above the eye. His place was taken during the remainder of the game by Davis. The various fixtures under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Rugby Union wero continued on Saturday. The principal match of the day was that played on the Showgrounds between Masterton and Carterton Senior teams. There was a very large attendance of the public, and considerable interest was taken in the game.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

CARTERTON (6) v. MASTERTON (3).

The above match was the first to commence ori'the local ground, and was very willingly contested throughout. Id the first spell the local team held a slight advantage, but, were unable to cross their opponents' line, and the only score registered was a goal from a mark kicked by A. Ross. In the second spell the visitors played better football than did the Masterton team, and Mason and Oallister scored* a try each, neither of which was convered. Mr A. B. Charters proved an impartial referefe. GREYTOWN (16) v. RED STAR NIL.

That match was played at Greytown in the presence of a fair number of spectators, and resulted in a very easy victory for Greytown by 16 points to nil. Mr Roydhouse re^oreed.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. TEORE ORE (13) v. GREYTOWN (0). Te Ore Ore met and defeated Greytown in the No. 2 ground Sy 13 points to nil: Tries were scored by Rangi (2) and Tory.(l), two of which were converted by Thompson. Mr J. McKenzie, was referee.

CARTERTON (18) v. MASTERTON (0).

This match was played at Carterton and resulted in a decisive victory < by 18 points to nil for the home team. Tries were scored by C. Thomas, Henderson, Ofsoskl, (2), Hodge and Bond. None! of the tries were converted. Mr _L. Armstrongcontrolled the game.

RED STARS (11) v. MARTINBOROUGH (6).

The Red Star juniors journeyed to Morison's Bush and met Martinlorough, and defeated them by 11 points to 6. The southerners scored theiir' points within ten minutes after the game commenced. Faulkner, Colder and Marsh scored tries for Red Star. one of which Ball converted. M$J. M. Nicholls had .charge of the' whistle.,' ~ ■-,.'',

Masterton Thirds met- Red Star Thirds in a scratch match on Fraser'a paddock, but a *well*contested game resulted in a draw; each side scoring three point?, Jackson being responsible for Stag's score, and Wellington ;i for Masterton's. It was decided to suggest Mr E. McKenzie as referee in the Wairar-apa-Bush match.
