INDIAN TELEGRAPHISTS.
END OF THE STRIKE. Received April 21, 8.30 a.m. CALCUTTA, April 20. The Indian telegraph operators strike has ended. The Government has appointed a committee to inquire into the grievances. MR NEWLAND'S AIM. , Received April 21, 10.43 p.m. CALCUTTA, April al. In connection with the Indian telegraphists' strike, Mr Newland'saim was to bring the bulk of the men on duty when the traffic was heaviest. The telegraph operators in India are dissatisfied with the regulations introduced by Mr Newlands, an expert lent by the British Post .Office authorities, and have been wilfully delaying telegraph messages. On the sth inst. it was reported that 5,000 telegrams were lying heaped up at Rangoon, and cablpgrams from Europe, via Teheran, were seriously delayed at Kerachi and onwards. Two days later it was announced that 40,000 telegrams were delayed in India owing to the disaffection amongst the telegraphists. Some of these messages were a week old. Several messages, also, were reported to have been stolen, including one of the Viceroy's.
