CABLE NEWS.

j THE RIOT AT LISBON. THE DEATH ROLL. Received April 9, 8.53 a.m. r PARIS. April 8. 3 The newspaper "Le Matin" state: 3 that six persons were killdd outrigh ; in the riot at Lisbon on Monday last ; and four succumbed to their wound! subsequently. Four nudred receivec minor injuries. I It was at first reported that thret people had been killed in the riot. The London "Daily Mail," oi February 24th, referring to the unrest in Portugal, said:—"Lisbon is still simmering though all has been quiet on the surface since the i murder of King Carlos and the Crown * Prince on February Ist. The latest development is a reactionary intrigue planned by the followers of the fallen Dictator, Senhor Franco. Its object was to cause public riots which would give excuse for a resumption of repressive measured. Probably it was inspired in part by Republican adulation of the regicides. Success almost came to the plotters. Hurried conferences took place between the King and his Ministers, regiments were confined to barracks, a warship was suddenly sent away on a cruise, and an armed crowd assembled in Lisbon streets. Prompt action by the authorities and I the knowledge that to demonstrate would play into the reactionaries hands kept the populace quiet. Undoubtedly a reactionary p»ot organised by the followers of the ex-Dic-tator, Senhor Franco, by the Nation alists, and by other sections was to have come to a head. The chief reactionary leaders went to the palace to speak with King Manuel, but were ' refused an audience. At the same time the chief reactionary organ published a declaration that the populace now governed Portugal. All the facts corroborate the belief in an important political intrigue. Public opinion attribute articles in the newspapers in England, France, and Italy to the reactionaries, whose manoeuvres excite public irritation, thereby facilitating disorders which would afford the plotters a reason for demanding extraordinary measures. The Prime Minister has been in frequent conference with the King, who places his faith in a scheme of liberal reform, and insists on keeping the actions of the Government bounds."
