MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
1 MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterfcon School Committee was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs R. Brown (chairman), H. J. O'Leary, H. H. Cork, J. Carpenter, G. Townsend, Rev. J. N. Buttle, W. A. Feudal!, and E. H. Waddington. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £43 18s. In reference to the Committee's suggestion that the Cookery Class be deferred, the Wellington Education Board wrote pointing out that this could not be done, inasmuch as the cookery room was privided on the distinct condition that cookery classes should be regularly held at Masterton. Moreover, the Board, added the letter, had Mis 3 Talbot, the instructress of the class, under constant engagement, and the funds for her salary were provided from the capitation of these classes. The Committee accepted the tender uf Mr H. Evans for the winter supply of firewood to the school. The monthly report of the Headmaster (Mr W. H. Jackson) was as follows :—Attendance. —Main School. Roll, 657; average attendance, 589; percentage of attendance, 90. Side School. —Roll, 194; average attendance, 174; perc?ntage of attendance. 90. Secondary Classes.—Roll, 73; average attendance, 67; percentage of attendance, 92. The wet weather has made a little difference in the attendance, but notwithstanding this a good record has been i made. The absentee report for the | month contains the names of several scholars who are receiving attention from the truant officer. The lower portion of the boys' playground is in a very bad state during the present wet weather. lam sorry that the work which was to have been done in the Christmas vacation has been delayed. The erection of the proposed new secondary class-room will do away with the necessity of a portion of the levelling. I therefore hope the Committee will bring pressure to bear upon the Board that the work may be taken in hand at once. A plan has ueen prepared by the Board's Clerk of Works. The consent of the Minister is all that is now required to enable the work to be proceeded with. It was resolved to write to the Education Board with reference to improving the boys' playground, ab suggested in the Headmaster's report. Accounts amounting to £25 11» 7d were passed for payment.
