DISASTROUS FIRE.
' SEVERAL BUILDINGS DESTROYED. BY TELEGRAPH —PKESS ASSOCIATION. GORE, April 6. A disastrous fire occurred at Mataura at two o'clock this morning. The fire, which was discovered in the hardware premises of Mr J. T. J. Gait, in the centre of the town, spread to the premises of Alex. Gait (butcher), Welham Bros, (bakers), and Watson (tinsmith) on one side of the street; and on the other to a small building occupied by Mr Mackay (dentist), and Dr. Way, where it was stopped by a brick wall. These premises, and nearly all the contents, were destroyed. The stocks of Messrs Domigan (chemist), Greenwood (stationer), Hardy (tobacconist), Adams (cyclist), Smith and Jeffery (watchmakers), and the Southland Drapery Company, were removed in safety, but the spread of the fire wa3 stopped through the exertions of a bucket brigade.
The insurances available are:—J. T. J. Gait, £2OO on the premises and £I,OOO on the stock, in the North British Company; Alex Gait Grant, £IOO in the Victoria Company; Welhan Bros., stock and plant £IOO iri the South British Company, and £IOO in the Victoria Company.
