THE PECKHAM ELECTION.
LIBERALS ALARMED. Received March 27, 8.43 a.m. LONDON, March 26. Liberals declare that the Unionist Tariffite victory at Peckham makes it imperative to pass the Licensing Bill, otherwise the Liberals may lose all the bye-elections. The bye-election for the Camberwell Division of Peckham rendered necessary by the death of Mr Charles Goddard Clarke (Liberal), caused the greatest excitement for many years. It resulted:—Mr Gotch, Unionist Tariffite, 4,970; Mr Gautrey, Liberal, 4,476. While the President of the Board of Trade, the Right Hon. D. LloydGeorge, was speakinc in the House of Commons, to a fiscal reform resolution in connection with unemployment, moved by Mr E. A. Goulding, member for Worcester, news of the Peckham election result was received. It raised roar after roar of cheers from the Unionist benches. Unionists stood excitedly waving hats and handkerchiefs, and shouting "Resign! You will be unemployed directly."
