CHINA AND JAPAN.
BOYCOTT OF JAPANESE GOODS PROPOSED. Received March 27, 10.36 a.m. SYDNEY, March 27. Chinese merchants in this State propose to take united action to boycott the goods of Japanese firms. Arrangements have been completed for the establishment of a line of steamships, to be owned exclusively by Chinese, to trade between Hongkong and Sydney. The Tatsu Maru incident is said to be the cause of this action. On March 9th a monster meeting of Chinese, held at Canton, resenting the release of the Japanese steamer Tatsu Maru, which had been seized By the Chinese authorities at Macao, on the ground that it was supplying arms to Chinese rebels, resolved to, boycott Japanese manufactures. Behind the single incident comprised in this seizure there is a considerable ferment of bad feeling, which has been working between Japan and China for some time. In January the Tokio newspaper "Kokuminshinbun" complained of the Chinese attitude towards Japan, and hinted that unless outstanding questions are arranged, Japan will be forced to mobilise 700,000 men.
