THE HOP INDUSTRY.
J CARGO FOR LONDON. Received March 27, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, March 25. The "Daily Express" states that the steamer Adriatic left New York yesterdav with 3,000 tons of hops for I Lombn," chiefly from the Pacific coast. Owing to a glut owners are glad to accept a price much below 1 the cost of production. An agitation against the free importation of foreign hops has been growing up in Kent for some time, and the Government in February appointed a select committee to inquire into the condition of the industry. A meeting of the Keitish giowers, held on February 20th, resolved that the time was ripe for the Government to take action to protect English growers against unfair foreign competition. Some speakers suggested a duty of 40s per cwt.
