THE PAINTERS' STRIKE. SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY MEN IDLE. Received March 24, 9.46 p.m. SYDNEY, March 24. The painters' strike is extending. Seven hundred and fifty men are now idle. A few firms have conceded the demands of the painters. The painters have struck for an increase in wages of one penny per hour. A number of Government contracts are involved. WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. POSITION BELIEVED TO BE IMPROVED. Received March 25, 1.6 a.m. SYDNEY, March 24. The conference of representatives! of the Coastal Steamship Companies and the Wharf Labourers' Union was continued to-day. After the adjournment the press representatives were informed that the position was not any more critical than yesterday. , A definite statement as to whether there will be peace or a continuation, of the struggle will probably be given to-morrow afternoon. There is reason to believe, however, that the position is somewhat improved The Deep Sea Stevedores' Association has issued summonses against fourteen members of the Wharf Labourers' Union for breaches of the award.
