' THE ANGLO-JAPANESE \ ALLIANCE. 1 LONDON, March 20. £ The "Manchester Guardian," discussing Mr Deakin'3 defence proposals, reminds Australia that oniy the Anglo-Japanese Alliance has enabled the Motherland to safely withdraw her battleships from the Far East. Nobody really supposes, says the "Guardian," that Japan could dream of harbouring designs against Australia. Moreover, she could not do so without rousing airainst herself all the white people inteiested in the Orient. ( WOMEN'S FRANCHISE. | PREPARING FOR A VIGOROUS ! CAMPAIGN. LONDON, March 20. , A great meeting of suffragettes in , Albert Hall welcomed the released \ suffragettes. Mrs Pankhurst. presid- ] ing, urged them to re-double their , efforts to secure their enfranchisement. Self - denial work increased the funds by £2,500. An anonymous lady promised £I,OOO a year. Mrs Lawrence gave £I,OOO, while over £2,500 was subscribed at the meeting.
