WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. NEWCASTLE COAL COURT ' CLOSED. SYDNEY, March 2L The conference of coastal companies and wharf labourers will.be continued to-day. The prospects of a settlement are regarded hopefully.. , The South Bulli mining trouble has' been amicably settled. When the Newcastle Coal Court n re-assembled, the president an-; nounced that the Court could no. longer put up with the present pasi- | tion. It had waited three days, for the Pelaw Main and Burwood pits ' to resume work without result He i commented strongly on the attitude of the Miners' Federation. Either it I could not or would not enforce discipline amongst its members. It seemtd ; .to be an organisation which was left at the mercy of its least responsible members. The way the Federation acted at the bidding of boys resembled a general who, in the middle of the battle, had to go to a drummerboy and ask him not to upset his .plans. The flouting of the Court was an affront to his self-respect and he : would not stand it any longer. He closed the Court, but would not send in ;his resignation immediately in order to give tho parties time to consider the position. .Both sides feur this will lead to a renewal and compilation of the trouble. PROSEECTSOF A SETTLEMENT HOPEFUL. Received March 23, 12.45 a m. SYDNEY, March 22. The strike, conference has adjourned till Monday, when there is reason to hope a settlement will be reached.
