MASTERTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

HEADMASTER'S MONTHLY REPORT. The report of the Headmaster of the Masterton District High School (Mr W. H. Jackson) for the past month is as follows Attendance, Main School, roll 660, average attendance 605; percentage of attendance [)2; Side School, roll 186, average attendar!ce, ; l77, percentage of attendance 95; Secondary School, roll 75, average attendance 70, percentage of attendance 94. An excellent record of attendance for the month has been made in all three departments. Fine weather during the whole month, and the almost entire absence of sickness have contributed largely to this very satisfactory result. Two of the senior girls of the school have been appointed to the pupil-teacher staff. A third will be appointed during the present month. The following matriculated pupils from this school will commence their university course at Victoria College at the end of this month: — Berthel Syverston, Colin Hendry, Colin Grant, Aidney Jackson, Evelyn Elliott, Edith .Vurray, Mary McKenzie, Dorothy Jackson, Jessie Campbell. In the case of BerIhel Syverston the Trust Lands Trust has granted him a scholarship of £4O a year. All the other matriculated students are entitled to a Trust Lands Trust Scholarship of £lO a year, subject in every case to a satisfactory report as to diligence and conduct. The question of the re-opening of the girls' cookery classes at the school has been brought under 'my nutica by the Secretary of the Education Board. Ths cookery room is now occupied by ;i secondary class for which there is no other accommodation. It is suggested by the Board's Secretary that a room should be secured in the town for this class, or for some other school class, in order to make the cookery room available for the classes in cookery. I refer the matter to the School Committee. I have pleasure in reporting that great success is attending the work in connection with the swimming classes. Twelve classes of boys and girls are under instruction. This is as much as can be undertaken this season. The recent slight rains have been sufficient to indicate that the gutters on the roof of the Main School building have contracted a fresh attack of their old summer complaint of "sun cracks." A number of other repairs have been attended to by the visiting member. I desire to thank the committee for its letter of congratulation to the staff and myself on the recent successes of the pupils of this school in the matriculation and other examinations.
