S. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
RECITAL OF SACRED MUSIC.
The recital of sacred music at S. Matthew's Church, last evening, was attended by a very large congregation, who were agreeably surprised at the excellence of the programme provided. Though many of the items chosen were of a highly classical . nature, the soloists and choruses ) gave a very creditable rendering of their parts, demonstrating the careful training of thu choirmaster, MrH. S. Claughton. The "Magnificat in F" (T<iurs) was the opening vocal item, and the rendition was an excellent one. Gounod's "0 Divine Redeemer" was well suited to Miss F. Elkins' contralto voice, and the singer gave a highly meritorious performance. "The Wilderness," by Wesley, was given with good effect by Misses Holloway and F. Elkins and Messrs Nixon and Hunn with full chorus. An unaccompanied quartette, "God is a Spirit," by Misses Holloway, E. Jago and Fuller, and Messrs W. A. Fendall and F. J. Hunn was a very enjoyable item. Miss Vera Edwards took the solo in the motet "Hear my Prayer," and performed her part most creditably. She was ably assisted by the choir as a full chorus. Mr Claughton gave three organ solos, viz., "Prelude and Fugue in G," "Impromptu in A flat," "Toccata and Fugue 111 D Minor," all of which were rendered in a masterly style. The remainder of a very enjoyable programme consisted of two choruses, "Nunc Dimittis in F" and "Grand Choeur in D major." Ths offertory was in aid of the Choir funds.
