CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

QUARTERLY MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

The Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce held it 3 monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. Present:—Messrs T. G. Mason (chairman), C. E. Daniell, J. C. Ewington, E. E. Chamberlain, D. Donald, M. Caselberg, J. D. Cruickshank and A. Henderson. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £8 17s Bd. The Chairman briefly welcomed Mr Daniell on his return to the Chamber, and Mr Daniell suitably acknowledged the welcome. A letter was read from the County Clerk, in reply to the Chamber's letter asking that a committee be set up to confer with other local body delegates,"and a Chamber committee to discuss the improvement of the northern approach. The reply was to the effect that if the Chamoer would submit a feasible scheme of improvement the Council would be pleased to move in the matter.

Mr Caselberg moved, after abiief discussion on the lines of previous debates on the same question, Miat the secretary reply drawing the Council's attention to the fact that the Chamber has not the facilities for drawing plans, etc., and they think that as the northern approach is under the Stranty Counci's control the initiative should come from that body. This was carried unanimously. A letter was received from Messrs Jackson Bros., telephone contractors, expressing the opinion that if the telephone exchange at Masterton were opened at, say, six o'clock—or seven o'clock —in the monvng, instead of at eight .o'clock, as at present, it would be found very convenient to subscribers in business.

The chamber expressed strong sympathy with the views outlined in the letter, and it was uananimously decided to request {he telephone authorities to open the exchange at 6 a.m, and also during the time the telegraph office is open on Sundays. Mr Donald brought up the question of opening up the Whareama river. He said that from his own knowledge of the river he could say it was a most beautiful pleasure resort, and being within such convenient distance of Masterton a resolution, by the Chamber which might assist in its being thrown openito the public was certainly justifiable. The following resolution was carried unanimously:— That this Chamber approve the scheme for the opening up of the Whareama rive l " as a health resort for the town of Masterton, and that a copy of this resolution be forwardedv to Messrs Hogg and Hornsby, asking them to use their best efforts towards acquiring a public road to the shipping place at Kohiwai.

Mr Ewington remarked that the opening up of the river, combined with the sub-dividing (after resumption) of lea station, which was now being strenuously petitioned for, were matters of supreme importance to Masterton', and it was to be earnestly hoped the two matters would be persistently agitated for.
