A Maritime Action.
WELLINGTON, January 28. Captain Kempson, master of the steamer Athenic, was charged at, the Court, to-day, with having transferred five firemen from the Athenic to the steamer lonic without first discharging them, and paying them off in the presence of the superintendent of the Mercantile Marine, as provided by the New Zealand 'aw. It was contended for the defence that the men were in the serviee of the same .company under the same agreement for the voyage to the dominion and baiki and under the Board, of Trade regulations the transfer was properly effected. The prosecution suggested that the men were transferred from the one steamer to the other by launch, and not taken to the shipping office first so as to avoid the risk of their being intimidated by other firemen, who were asking £25 and £3O for their services on the voyage. Judgment was reserved.
