Attempted Suicide.
CHRISTCHURCH, January 28. A considerable amount of excitement was caused on the ferry steamer Maori during the voyage from Wellington to Lyttelton last night. It is stated that a girl, named Olive Laura Grimes, said to be well connected in Wellington, made two attempts to throw herself overboard. It was noticed when she joined the steamer at Wellington that she was rather depressed in her manner, but as the night wore on, she became rather hysterical, and made the attempts at self-destruction.' Miss Grimes was charged this afternoob, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., with attempting to commit suicide., . The young lady said, when asked for an explanation, that she was rather hysterical at times. A little time ago a young man whom she was engaged to died. She met a brother to this gentleman 011 the Maori last evening, and after talking about her late intended became despondent, and attempted to jump overboard. She had had such a lesson now that she would not commit the act again. The Magistrate pointed • out the serious position she had placed herself in, but as bhe had promised she would not again make an attempt to take her life he discharged her.
