SWIMMING.

AUCKLAND, January 24. At the Swimming Carnival, this evening, tha quarter-mile championship of Auckland was contested, six swimmers competing. M. E. Champion, of Auckland, was first, J. Grant, late of the West Coast, second, and A. W. Kein, of Auckland, third. Only three finished. Champion's time is given as 6min 19sec, which establishes a record for New Zealand, the previous best being Gin in 28sec, hy Bull, of Christchurch. One of the timekeepers made Champion's time 2 sec. slower.
