SYDNEY WOOL SALES. Received January 21, 9.48 p.m. SYDNEY, January 21. The wool sales re-opened with prices for all good sorts at about equal to the closing sales in December. Inferiors dragged, and greasy sold up to 13d. COMMERCIAL BANKING COMPANY. A GENEROUS DONATION. Received January 21, 9.48 p.m. SYDNEY, January 21. At the halt-yearly meeting of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney the net profits were shown to be £110,665. A dividend of 10 per cent, was declared. The sum of £20,000 was added to the Reserve Fund, and £29,377 was carried forward. To commemorate his sixty years' as'.ociation with the bank, Sir George Dibbs, the general manager, donated £5,000 to inaugurate a fund for the relief of sickness, distress and misfortune amongst the officers of the bank. THE THAW TRIAL. EVELYN THAW'S HISTORY. A SENSATION CREATED, < Received January 21, 8.47 a.m. NEW YORK, January 20. Efforts to hear Mrs Evelyn Thaw's testimony privately failed. The court decided that all names of persons conr nected with her history must be menr tioned publicly. The decision created a sensation, as these names were concealed at the former trial. MRS THAW'S EVIDENCE. A MERCILESS CROSS-EXAMINAV TION. Received January 21, 8.59 p.m. NEW YORK, January 21. Mrs Evelyn Thaw, in her evidence, described her life's history, her statements being practically the same as those she made at the former trial. She asserts that Thaw attempted to commit suicide while they were at Monte Carlo. After her recital of White's brutalities Mr Jerome's merciless crossexamination reduced the witness to tears. , " (This cable refers to the trial of Harry Thaw for the murder of Standford White in Madison Square Gardens). ■: ELECTRIC TRAMS COLLIDE. THIRTY-SEVEN PERSONS INJURED. Received January 21, 8.40 a.m. PARIS, January 20. Through a collision between electric trams in Paris, 37 persons were injured. PLOT TO DESTROY AMERICAN BATTLESHIPS. RIO DE JANIERO, Januray 21. Three Italians have been arrested on a charge of plotting to destroy American battleships. It is believed that two other Italians, a Canadian and a German are also concerned.
(A cable published yester.day morning stated that Router's New York correspondent had reported that, according to a telegram from Rio de Janeiro, the capital ot' Brazil, the Brazilian police had discovered an Anarchist plot to destroy part of the American lleet while it is in Rio harbour. Jean Fedcher, residing at Petropolis. is said to be the chief conspirator, but Anarchists in other suburbs, and some abroad, are reported to be co-operating.)
