ADELAIDE'S PORT.
NEW OUTER HARBOUR - - /OPENED.
Received January 17, 10 a.m. ADELAIDE, January 17. The Governor (Sir G. le Hunte) officially opened the outer harbour, constructed at a cost of half a million. It provides a thousand feet of wharfage. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Co.'s Oruba was the first big steamer to berth in the new harbour.
TASMANIAN CABLES. A COMMONWEALTH UNDERTAKING. Received January 17, 10 a.m. .MELBOURNE, Jaruary 17. Negotiations with the Eastern Extension Company for the purchase of the Tasmanian cables having so far failed, the Federal Government is inviting tenders for the manufacture and laying' of two cables, between Victoria and Tasmania, at an estimated cost of between £60,000 and £70,000. Tenders, accompanied by a deposit of £I,OOO, close on April 14th.
(The Eastern Extension Company asked £39,000 for cables, buildings and Balance of subsidy, but this the Federal Government could not see its way to give),

Received January 18, 12.27 a.m. SYDNEY, January 17. Th 3 motorists failed in their attempt through taking the wrong road when nearing Sydney.
